The Last Two Weeks

It has been a great two weeks in the Waterford Athletic Department. Hopefully, you have been following all the exciting action that has been taking place at all of our middle schools and high schools.

It all started with a terrific afternoon of middle school football as Pierce and Mason battled it out at Pierce in front of a packed house. Both the JV and Varsity games came right down to the wire and gave every fan something to cheer about. Pierce took the JV contest and Mason won between to two varsity squads. That very same week Kettering was fortunate to be able to host the MHSAA District Volleyball Tournament. Both Mott and Kettering participated in this event with Kettering making it all the way to the finals. They eventually fell to a very good Avondale team before an large and enthusiastic crowd.

The excitement wrapped up with the Mott boys and girls Cross Country Teams both qualifying for the MHSAA State Meet at the Michigan International Speedway. This was the first time in Mott's history that both programs were going together. It turned out to be a terrific day for both Mott and the toughest cross country association in the state of Michigan the Kensington Lakes Athletic Association (KLAA). Shannon Osika went out fast despite having battled a cold all week. She pushed herself the whole way finishing in the 5th spot. This marks the 4 straight year that Shannon has finished the State Championships as a All State Runner, congratulations Shannon. The news got even better for Shannon this week as she has verbally committed to the University of Michigan to accept a full athletic scholarship to run cross and track for the Wolverines. The KLAA Dominates the race. The top 30 finishers are designated all state of the top 30 finishers 14 came from schools within the KLAA.

The attention now moves to the boys cross country championship which Scott Albaugh and his teammates had worked all year to qualify for. This season marks the first time since 1978 that Mott has qualified the boys team. Scott had been progressing toward this event having finished 2nd in the tough KLAA Lakes Conference meet and winning the MHSAA Regional Championship. This is what Scott had been training for a chance to beat the best. The race started with Scott getting out well avoiding being trapped in the pack. Then at the one mile mark he just accelerated and took control of the race. He was finally caught at mile number 3 by a very accomplished runner from Monroe High School but this was Scott's day as he kicked it in over the final 500 meters to edge out his counterpart to bring home the MHSAA Individual State Championship. We are very fortunate to have a photo of Scott crossing the finish line. Way to go Scott.

Champions Walk: To Honor Teams Headed to State Championships

We are excited to announce the "Champions Walk" this is a new tradition that will take place at both Mott and Kettering any time a team qualifies for the State Championships. The "Champions Walk" will occur at the end of the day as our teams are led through the school by the drum-line and are honored by students, staff and parents. An announcment kick off the walk as we highlight the accomplishment and promote the event to come. Our first "Champions Walk" will take place this Friday, as we send off the boys and girls cross country teams from Mott to Brooklyn Michigan for the MHSAA Cross Country State Championships on Saturday. The girls will race at 2:00 while the boys will start at 3:00. Both our teams will be led by State Champion contenders Shannon Osika and Scott Albaugh. Scott and Shannon were crowned Regional Champion this past Saturday at Algonac. Good luck to both teams Waterford is very proud of all of you.

Fall Season is Winding Down

Tonight we say goodbye to the 2010 football season as Mott takes on Jackson for Homecoming and Kettering battles North Farmington at Kettering. It seems like yesterday that we started two a days and the kids were battling the hot summer temperatures. Now tonight we will have on our winter coats and hats as we say goodbye to the fall sports season and we prepare for the winter season. As we wait for old man winter there is still some great action coming your way from our many sucessful fall teams. The cross country teams at both schools will be participating in the MHSAA Regionals at Algonac on Sturday October 30. Several of the our runners will be looking to advance to the MHSAA State Championships at MIS in Brooklyn Michigan. Swimming and Volleyball will also be wrapping up there season in the next couple of weeks with District Tournaments and the MHSAA Swim State Championships at Oakland University. Dig Pink Scheduled for Tonight

This past Saturday was a terrific day of football and community pride as Mott and Kettering faced off on the football field to see who would take home the "Skippers Oar". Tonight is a culmination of all those activites with another great Mott v Kettering game. The annual Dig Pink Volleyball game will be contested at Waterford Mott beginning with the JV/Freshmen contest at 5:30 and the varsity game will follow. Much of tonight proceeds will go to fight the battle against Cancer. Please if you are looking for something to do head on over to Mott and support these young athletes as they battle for a great cause.

Going to be a great day at Waterford Mott tomorrow as Waterford Kettering and Waterford Mott battle for the "Old Skippers Oar" trophy. Kettering has won the last 2 in this long standing series. Many other activities have been planned for this day including WCSX giving some lucky fan a chance to win $10,000.00 for simply kicking a field goal. Also the forgotten harvest truck will be on campus so please bring your food donations. The Broadway Show "Rock of Ages" will have their truck available and one lucky fan will win a 4 pack of tickets to the Fisher Theater. All and all a great day to be had by everyone. Lets make Waterford proud tomorrow.
